The Importance of Employee Wellness Programs

Why bother with them

First, what are they?  It’s an employer sponsored program offered to employees and their family members that promotes health and the prevention of diseases.  There are programs that are targeted to healthy employees to encourage them to maintain their healthy lifestyle. Some examples are stress management and exercise programs.  There are programs that encourage employees to participate in health screenings, and eliminate at risk activities, such as smoking.  Last, some health programs seek to control existing health conditions.  An employer is free to choose as many or as few wellness programs as desired.  Many employers select plans based on their industry, and others interview employees to see what interests them before implementing a plan. After employee wellness programs are established, employers ask participants to complete health assessments and undergo biometric tests, and in return, the employer may reward employees with discounts on health care premiums or grant access to health education programs.

So what’s in it for the employer?

Well of course, there is a financial element to the wellness programs.  Initially, the employer may spend some money to implement the plan; however, the employer is looking at the end result.  If workers are healthy, then they are able to come to work, and absenteeism is usually low, and productivity is usually high.  Another benefit of having employee wellness programs is that it encourages employees to stay in good health, which reduces the amount of medical expenses the employer will have to pay.

Employee wellness programs are also good for employee engagement.  They encourage employees to become more involved with their workplace, to prioritize the values of the organization, and stay productive throughout the work day.  Imagine a worker who looks forward to coming to work every day and gives his all?  Now, that would be a golden employee!

Another advantage of employee wellness programs is that it can make the total compensation package richer.  Most workers are no longer solely concerned with the salary number; they want as many perks as they can get.  Can you blame them?  No!  Additionally, a wellness plan can help differentiate one employer from the next, and it sends the message that the company values the health of its employees.

So are employee wellness programs still worth the hassle?

Yes.  They are great for employee attraction and engagement!
